what causes sweet onions to be extremely strong?

I have planted Candy onions and really had great success. Last year, they were so strong, they weren't hardly eatable. What did I do wrong? Not enough water, too much?

Hi, Well all onions require a very fertile soil and plenty of water. I can't say why your crop was strong without knowing more about how you grew them, but fertilizer and water are two key ingredients. Plus, an early start in the garden helps. They require an early spring start when the weather is still cool and moist. Be sure to mulch your crop and you might even want to give your plants a dose of liquid fertilizer every two weeks through the growing season.
