Squash with green streaks

"Two of my healthiest looking yellow sqaush plants are producing squash with green streaks on them. They're getting large & ready to harvest:what causes this & are they edible? Also, some smaller squash plants are producing small hard orange squash that is not edible(tough & fiberous). Any ideas on this? Thanks"

Your squash plants may be affected by a mosaic virus. There are several mosaic viruses that can infect squash. All cause mottled greening to develop on the fruits. The viruses are usually spread by aphids or leafhoppers. It is a good idea to remove infected plants to prevent the disease from spreading to unaffected ones. Some varieties have good resistance to the diseases. 'Freedom III" has 3-way resistance to the mosaic viruses.
