Thanks for writing. It's not uncommon for early squash to shrivel up instead of starting to grow if the flowers are not pollinated. Do you see many bees/butterflies in your garden? If not, try planting some flowers around your squash to help encourage them.
Squash will sometimes abort their fruits if conditions aren't right, either --- so if it's been especially hot or cold, wet or dry, especially if the change in weather came on suddenly. Happily, if this is the case, the problem should correct itself as the weather pattern changes.
