small and slow growing cucumbers

I am growing cucumbers in a large container (approximately 8-10 gallons). They seem to be not growing very big. About the size of my pinky finger. And they have been that size for about 3-4 weeks. I have increase the watering to about 3 gallons of water a day and they seem to have double or tripled in size already. Do they normally need alot of water? I have also applied homemade compost to the top and around the plant. I had already mixed in cow manure to the soil. Thank you in advance.

I think you're doing everything right, but the long cool spring we had this year definitely slowed the garden down. Yes, cukes need a lot of water when they're forming fruit, but take care not to let the soil be soggy. The recent heat will speed things up. Just keep them watered and in full sun.
