salt in asparagus patch

HI. I LIVE IN NORTHERN ILINOIS.SOMEONE TOLD ME TO PUT ROCK SALT IN MY ASPARAGUS PATCH TO KEEP THE WEEDS DOWN,BUT WONT THAT HURT THE SOIL? MY PATCH HAS BEEN THERE FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS AND EVERY SPRING I DO PUT A TOP LAYER OF PEAT MOSS ON. ANY IDEALS FOR BETTER WEED CONTROL? THANKS

Do not put rock salt on your garden. This is a folk remedy that won't work and will do a lot of harm to your soil. Mulching asparagus with several inches of compost is the best way to keep weeds down. That, and an occasional visit with a garden hoe."
