Raised Beds

"Is it safe to use landscape timbers for raised beds that will be used for growing vegetables? I want to build them 4' by 4' and possibly 2 or 3 landscape timbers deep. Thanks, Theresa"

It's not a good idea to use any kind of chemically treated lumber for raised beds that will be used to grow edible plants. Although the chemical compounds used to treat lumber have changed over the years, the new chemical formulas still contain harmful toxins including arsenic. As the wood weathers, the toxins are released into the soil. Consider edging your raised beds with natural stone or landscape blocks.
