Pressure treated wood for raised vegetable beds.

Is it safe to use old pressure treated wood for raised vegetable beds? Can I make it safe with paint or lining with heavy plastic?

The jury is still out on the safety of old treated wood timbers. Some research indicates that the form of arsenic used in the timbers is quite immobile and not likely taken up by the plants. Other studies shows an increased level of soil arsenic near old timbers. To be safe, line the timbers with heavy-duty plastic to prevent vegetable roots from coming into contact with higher levels of arsenic compounds.
