Mulch for Tomatoes

"I live in the South and would like to know if I can use pine bark mulch for my vegetable (tomato) garden. If not, what do you suggest? Thank you"

You can use pine bark mulch around tomatoes. Organic mulches, such as pine bark, tend to keep the soil cooler, which is an advantage in Florida.

One reason wood chip or bark mulches are not often recommended for use in vegetable gardens is that they take quite a while to break down. This means that you may need to rake the mulch off to replant the area for the next crop cycle. If you decide to till the mulch into the soil, you should add additional nitrogen fertilizer to help break down the woody fibers.
