moldy zucchini plants

the bottom of my zucchini plant stalks are becoming white and moldy looking - is this the result of bugs? we have not had much rain and the garden has not been over watered.

This sounds like powdery mildew, a fungal disease that is more common on aging zucchini and summer squash plants. Some fungicides will help control it, although planting successive crops of summer squash can also help. Remove the older plants and allow the younger ones to keep producing.
