leaf lettuce going to seed?

I am growing leaf lettuce in a pot on my deck. It is mid July and the stalks appear to be going to seed. Is this the normal life span of the lettuce or should I pinch back the stalk ?

Yes, that's the normal life span of leaf lettuce; once hot summer weather arrives, the sweetest tender greens are done for the season. You can pinch out the seed stalks, but by the time the plant is producing them, it's usually a sign that the leaves will taste bitter. You can pull up your plants and sow a fall crop of leaf lettuce in its place.
