High lead content in soil
If your soil is contaminated the safest way to grow your own veggies is in containers. Any container will do, but you can grow a surprising amount of produce in large pots, tubs or anything that holds soil. Just be sure to use a commercial potting mix and that the container you choose has drainage holes in the bottom. Halved whiskey barrels are also an inexpensive container you can grow food in. Herbs will grow in almost any sized pot, while large veggies such as tomatoes need a bigger container. Just make sure you place the containers in a spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight a day. You can also mulch your pots to help keep soil moisture constant and lessen watering chores. You should be able to find lots of examples on our site BHG.com."
