yellow leaves on Gardenia Bush

What is causing the leaves on my Gardenia bush to turn yellow? It is getting plenty of water and is on our patio, screened, getting the morning sun. It is blooming, but not much. Some leaves are dark green, but some are turning yellow and dying.

Yellow leaves on your gardenia could be caused by a couple of different things. It sounds like you've got the water thing under control; gardenias should be kept evenly moist but not soggy or standing in water. Raise the humidity around your plant if you can. Next, I'd recommend fertilizing with a water-soluble fertilizer mixed at half strength every two weeks. Look for a fertilizer with iron chelete, because gardenias can be prone to chlorosis. Chlorosis causes a yellowing of the leaves, especially between the veins.

I found the following site helpful. They mentioned using cornmeal and fertilizer for acid loving plants. I tried it and it seemed to work for me. Hope it helps. http://rustyspade.com/masochist-or-gardenia-lover/

Vinegar is the secret to foolproof, low-maintenance gardenias. About 20 years ago, my mom sent me a clipping from the newspaper that said to use 1 TBSP of vinegar in 1 gallon of water per plant. Pour around base of plant, being careful it doesn't splash on leaves. If you get it on leaves, rinse off with water. I've been doing this for decades, only once or twice a year, and only when leaves yellow or blossoms fail to open. Maybe once or twice a year at the most. My gardenias are always perfect.

I also had a gardenia with yellowing leaves wich i had wintered in a container pot,i think that i set it out to early this spring and the cold night air got to it,so i removed it from the pot and planted it in my front flower bed that gets lots of sun.Gardenias do not like cold weather, after fertilizing and watering it is finally coming out of it and it amazingly bloomed despite droping almost all its leaves.
