Winterize Shrub Roses and Hydrangea

I live in zone 4. How do I winterize my shrub roses and hydrangeas? These plants were all planted in June so this will be their first winter. Please advise. Thank you very much.

Thanks for writing! It depends on what type of shrub roses and hydrangeas you have. If they're reliably hardy for your Zone, you don't need to anything special --- just let them go dormant on their own. If they're varieties that aren't reliably hardy, you'll probably want to give them a little extra protection (such as wrapping them in burplap and filling with leaves or straw to give a little extra insulation).
