windproof trees that grow fast

I need some real fast growing trees to replace 2 Easter red cedars that blew down after the last storm. I'm looking for a screening type tree for the sides of our back yard, that withstands wind storms & grows to over 12+ feet tall. They would be planted next to our privacy fence. I live in Carrollton, Virginia. Do you have some suggestions?

Well I would highly recomment arborvitae. This evergreen can eventually get 12 to 15 feet tall and it remains bright green all year long. it also does not get any wider than about 4 feet at most. For an evergreen it grows relatively quickly, but keep in mind that very fast growing trees are not always a good choice because the faster the plant grows, the weaker and shorter-lived it is. For example, willows grow very quickly, but die young and are very messy after storms. Whereas a tree like a maple or oak takes longer to develop, but has few problems down the road. I don't know much about your situation, but since you had cedars I assume you want an evergreen and in that case I'd go with arborvitae. The variety "Emerald" is quite nice and easy to find for sale at places such as Lowe's, Home Depot, Wal-Mart or independent garden centers. Just buy the largest specimens you can find and afford.
