white sticky things on azaleas

We have two azaleas and they are covered with white sticky things on the branches, close to the ground and not on the leaves. It looks like the azaleas are dying. What is this and how can I remedy this? Also, are these things going to infect my other plants?

I'm afraid that we can't be certain from this description what the white sticky substance is on your azaleas. How large are they? What shape are they? Are they smooth or rough? Do you see just 2 of them? What symptoms of dying do you see on the azaleas?

You may want to take a sample of the material to your local cooperative extension service for positive identification. Once it is identified, a treatment can be recommended.
