White Birch Tree

My White Birch Tree is losing its bark. The top of the tree looks great but it is loosing the bark so is that normal or is there something wrong with the tree and what can I do to fix the problem. Also, this evening I noticed that there is a couple of large type fungus growing out of the side of the tree. What should I do about that? I did use some fertilizer this spring to protect it from diseases. Thank you for your time, Melody Hollen

Hi Melody,

Thanks for writing. Without being able to see your tree, I can't say for sure what the problem is. Your best bet is to contact the folks at your county extension office at http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/kane/ --- they should be able to help a little better if you can bring in photos or samples of the affected parts of the tree.
