What can thrive in large oversized planter boxes that can offer up to 6-8 feet of privacy

need something at least 6-8 ft. tall that grows in full sun/calif. and can grow in large custom made planter boxes (5ft long 1ft wide, 2ft. tall)we need privacy from neighbors as well as camouflage an ugly cinder block wall. We used to have horse tail but our dogs get into everything that's why they need to be able to thrive in large planter boxes. Thinking about bamboo or fica plant???

Thanks for writing. Those boxes sound a little small for bamboo, but you may be able to get away with varieties such as Fargesia Green Screen or Fargesia Green Panda.

Otherwise, you might look at shrubs such as ceanothus, quail bush, coyote bush, coffeeberry, or toyon.
