What can I do about offshoots on my lilac bush?

I have a lilac bush with lots of suckers coming up from the roots. How do I stop them from coming up? This is in columbus ohio, I didn't have this problem with my lilacs in NY. thanks

Lilac varieties differ in the amount of suckering they produce from the root system. A few suckers are fine. Let the strongest ones grow as renewal shoots. But if too many are being produced, simply cut them off at ground level.
