What are some good shrubs and trees for container planting?

I have a deck that I would like to jazz up with some container plantings. It gets direct eastern sun in the summer and heats up pretty fast, but is completely shaded by 3:00 p.m. I live in a zone 6. Are there any flowering shrubs and trees you could recommend for container plantings? They would also need to overwinter on the deck as I don't have a sunny spot to move them into during the winter. Thank you! J. Darton

When overwintering shrubs in containers, it's a good idea to select plants that are a couple of Hardiness Zones hardier than your location, because the roots are more exposed in containers. So, in your case, choose plants that are hardy to Zone 4. Also, it's a good idea to select plants that are dwarf and somewhat drought tolerant because they will dry out faster in containers. Some shrubs that might fit the bill for you are junipers, potentilla, shrub roses, and caryopteris.
