Trees need to be removed

I live in northern Illinois. I have rogue trees growing amongst my hedges. I cut them down each year but they return. Can't dig them out, because they are too close to the hedges. The trunks are only 1 to 1 inches in diameter. Is there something I can use to kill them without hurting the hedges?

Next time when you cut the trees down, immediately paint the cut surface with a systemic brush killer or glyphosate (Roundup). Use caution to not spill any onto the shrubs.  It may take several rounds of cut back and herbicide application to completely kill them, but if you're persistent, you will succeed.
