Suckers at base of trees

Is it alright to spray the suckers at the base of trees with weed killer. Everything I can find says cut them short, but my husband says he knows someone who grows trees who says he sprays them all of the time. Please help. Thanks Kathy

Most weed killers kill systemically. That means the plant takes the poison in through its leaves and circulates it throughout its system before it dies. Spraying weed killer on tree suckers can harm--and possibly kill--the tree. (The damage would depend on the product used and the amount that the plant takes in.) Cutting the suckers back by hand is the best and safest solution.
