Starting new bamboo

How do I start new bamboo from my existing plants?
Submitted by BHGPhotoContest

Division is often the easiest way to start new bamboo plants. Types with running rhizomes can usually be divided by slicing some of the outward-running rhizomes, making certain that the new divisions have healthy roots and growing points, which will emerge as new shoots. Clump formers may need to be dug and cut through with a sharp spade, saw, or heavy-duty knife. Again, make certain that each division has roots and shoots to support the new plant. Early spring is the best time to divide most bamboos.
