What is the proper time & way to prune roses?
Winter is generally the right time. I like to wait until early spring, so I can see if any branches died back over winter. Many types of cut back to several main canes, but a lot of the more recent landscape roses can be left in shrubby form, cutting back hard only if you need to reduce plant size. No matter what, though, you will at least want to remove any long suckers or "whips" that grew, and anything dead.
