rooting tree branches

can i root a small branch from a japanese maple tree?

Some varieties of Japanese maple are virtually impossible to root from cuttings; others are merely difficult to root. And generally, grafted varieties perform better in the landscape than do own-root cuttings. So, it's probably best to leave the propagation of Japanese maple to commercial nurseries who can do the grafting.
