removing bamboo

i planted bamboo 10 years ago. it took on a life of its own. i have removed all of it but shoots still sprout up. what can i apply to remove it without damaging the surrounding st. augustine grass? i live in austin,tx.

Hi,

Thanks for writing. That's a tough one --- grass and bamboo are in the same plant family so typically any product that kills bamboo will probably also kill your grass.

You could treat the whole area with a non-selective herbicide such as Roundup and then re-seed/sod/sprig that section of your lawn. Or, you can take a paintbrush dipped in an herbicide and ""paint"" the weedkiller on any bamboo shoots that pop up out of the ground.
