Removing a Shrub
I suggest you cut it down in stages. Prune away as much as you can so that you have a easy path to cut the main trunk. This can be cut to about a foot with a hand or chain saw. Be careful! Then dig around the shrub with a spade or shovel to loosen the roots, and cutting through them. Finally cut underneath the root ball and pry it out of the ground. Add plenty of compost or other amendment in preparation for the new plants.
