Thanks for writing. I have a dawn redwood (Metasequoia) in my yard and it grows just fine. I don't really have any complaints about my tree or the species in general.
Things to watch out for include:
- It doesn't tend to do well in especially dry soil
- It doesn't like alkaline soil (acidic soil is much better for it)
- It's susceptible to a lot of damage by Japanese beetles
