Pruning Arborvitaes

I have five arborvitaes grown close together to form a privacy hedge. They have reached about 10 ft. tall. I would like to trim them down to about 8 ft. What time of the year is best for trimming and how should it be done?

Well you should never trim a conifer back that dramatically. Cutting two feet off your plants will be hard on them and make them look really bad. Spring, just as the plants are putting out new growth, is the best time to prune, but you'll have to do it gradually over a period of years if you want them to go down 2 feet in height. I would not cut them back more than 6 to possibly 8 inches at a time.
