proper pruning of crape myrtle

When is the proper time to prune crape myrtle and how should it be pruned?? I have been pruning all the dead flowers in the fall and shaping the shrub to keep it small. Is this OK? I live in New Jersey.

Hi
Well crape myrtles rarely, if ever, require pruning. I would take off the faded flowers and trim only those branches that are in your way. Otherwise, I suggest you leave it alone as much as possible.
