planting near maple tree

I have a maple tree in the center of a small back yard. We keep the tree thinned so we get filtered sunlight; most of which we don't get until late day. I would like some ideas on plants that would work with the root system of the maple and the light conditions. I currently have coneflowers and false sunflowers and they seem to do okay; they just don't seem to get as talland full. I would like to plant a few shrubs to gain a little privacy.

Hi,

Thanks for writing. If it's shady most of the day and you get filtered sun late in the day, your best bet would be to plant shade-loving varieties such as fothergilla, red-twig dogwood, winterberry, and some viburnums.
