planting maple tree
how far away from the house should I plant a Bloodgood Japanese Maple?
You'll want to give it several feet just to give it a little breathing room and keep the branches off your exterior. However, tucked up next to the house, it should do better because of the extra shade (I'm assuming it's on a N or E side, where it will get some shelter from your Calif sun), so keep it as close as you reasonably can. These trees stay relatively small, so roots shouldn't create a problem for foundations or anything like that.
