overgrown rose of sharon bushes

I live in Michigan and have 10 rose of sharon (hybiscus) bushes. this year they look really over grown with branches bending down, not as many leaves. they need a really good trimming but I'm not sure how and when to do this. they are blooming nicely . would fall be a good time to severly trim back?

Thanks for writing. You cut them back with no ill effect in winter or early spring before they put out new growth.
