non blooming black stemmed hydrangea
Thanks for writing. Do you prune your black-stemmed hydrangea? This variety blooms on last year's branches, so if you cut it back anytime from late summer to early spring, you're removing the flowers. Midsummer is the best time to prune it.
Also: Because it makes its blooms a year ahead of time, they're susceptible to winter cold damage or late spring frosts. It may be that this variety is not quite as hardy as your others --- and that's why it's not blooming but the others are.
