making tree trunk bigger

"I have a maple tree that is about 5ft tall and 2 years old. It is beautiful except the trunk is kind of skinny. Someone told me to cut the top out and it would make the trunk bigger. Thank you in advance for your help. Penny"

Cutting back branch tips is one way to thicken the branch that is cut back. However, it's best to avoid cutting back the main trunk or shoot of a tree. Maples, especially are prone to developing double leaders that are likely to split apart years later if the main shoot is topped or cut back. The trunk will increase in diameter each naturally. If it is standing upright on its own now, there is no need to take measures to thicken the stem.
