Magnolia scale

"We have a magnolia that always gets scale and looks as though it is going to die. We usually spray with dormant oil in spring, but it seems we are losing the battle. Do you have any suggestions?"

Once established, scale is a troublesome insect to get rid of, but you are on the right track. In early spring, before new growth begins, use a high-pressure sprayer to apply dormant oil to eradicate overwinter-ing insects. It is essential to thoroughly coat all sides of twigs and branches each time you spray. In September, when the immature scales are active, spray with Ortho Systemic Insect Control.
