Lilac shoots

How can I get rid of lilac shoots? If I spray them with a Brush killer, will it kill the whole tree?

Yes, if you spray the shoots with brush killer, you'll damage the entire plant. The only way to safely remove them is by cutting them off with a sharp spade underneath the soil. You could also mulch around the base of the mature plant with landscape fabric and several inches of bark mulch. This will kill any potential sprouts and keep them from coming up."
