Life of purple plum bushes

If purple plums are cut back to the ground will they form new bushes? They are over ten yrs. old and never pruned the right way.

"Don't cut them all the way to the ground. Leave about 18 inches of living stem, making sure that there is still some foliage remaining. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer and keep the bushes well watered because they will be under stress.
