Is there a way to stop a palm tree from growing once it has gotten to the desired height?
The short answer is "no." Palms grow only from their crowns; cutting the top kills the tree. Your best bet is to know how tall you want the plant to grow, then select a variety that reaches that height at maturity. Because palms vary so much in size and texture, you should be able to find one that fits your needs. Visit local botanical gardens to look at hardy varieties before choosing one for your yard.
