How to maintain and overwinter Mexican petunia in Illinois

Submitted by bhannel64

Thanks for writing! Because Mexican petunia (Ruellia) is not hardy in your area, you'll want to treat it like a houseplant. The best thing to do is dig it out of the ground, knock as much of the soil off the roots as you can, then pot it up in a potting mix made for container plants. Don't pot it up in garden soil --- that doesn't drain well in pots and can introduce pests and diseases into your home. Cut the plant back a bit, then water regularly (weekly or so, depending on your conditions). Give it good light and it should survive all winter long.
