green substance on bark of tree

Is the green substance growing on my Japanese maple tree trunk dangerous? I've noticed that the leaves last year didn't seem as strong as in previous years.

There are a couple of things that the green material on your Japanese maple could be. Neither is dangerous to the tree. One is moss. The other is lichen. The decline in vigor of the leaves last year would have no connection to either.
