gray leaves on holly

My 6 year old English holly came through the winter fairly well until a few weeks ago when its leaves began turning gray. Now most of the shrub is gray and the leaves crack off. I'm heartbroken! We live in NJ; zone 6.

Hollies that set a lot of fruit need a high-nitrogen fertilizer to green them up again. What you're describing doesn't fit the description of any holly diseases; the plant has just overextended itself. Sprinkle a granular fertilizer in a 3-4 foot circle around the base of the plant and scratch it in lightly with a rake.
