Flowering Pink Dogwood trouble
If the maple trees did not die from verticillium wilt, there's little possibility that they could have left anything in the soil that would affect the growth of dogwoods. However, perhaps there's something else about the site that is unfavorable to the growth of dogwoods, such as poorer drainage on that side. It's also possible that it's a matter of coincidence that the tree on the same side has died. You might consider planting a different kind of tree there. That way it won't have to match the other dogwood, and if a disease or insect problem hits one, it's not so likely to attack the other.
