Evergreen roots

I had a raised brick border built around an existing bed of evergreen bushes. They built it too high and I would like to fill it in with dirt (about 12 inches)to the top. Will that damage the roots of the bushes?

Thanks for writing. Adding a foot of soil over the top of the area will probably harm your evergreens. The reason is that plant roots need oxygen --- and the deeper the soil over them is, the less oxygen they get. (In fact, the majority of most plants' root systems is in the top 6 inches of the soil.)
