Cutting lilac tree

"i accidentally cut my wife's lilac tree but the roots of the tree is still in the ground will it bloom back? it was over ten foot tall. all it has is the base and some new sprouts. should i just dig it up or see if we will get new growth next year?"

"Lilacs do sucker from the roots and these suckers will turn into a new shrub if given time. If there are many suckers in a small space, you might thin them out, leaving the healthiest, strongest 5 to 7 stems to become the new shrub.
