controlling suckers from crabapple trees

How do I control the suckers at the base of my crabapple trees. I cut them off below ground level last year and they are back with a vengence. Help. They look terrible.

There are several commercially available sprout inhibitors that you could use to apply to cut surfaces to help prevent resprouting of the shoots. Most products contain naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), a type of plant growth regulator. A couple of brands that you could look for are Tre-Hold Sprout Inhibitor or Ferti-lome Prune Smart Sprout Inhibitor.
