Container tree for zone 5 deck sized 9'x9'

Can I plant a container tree on my zone 5 deck that is 9'x 9' in size?

Plants grown in containers are more exposed than those in the ground, so a rule of thumb is that for trees and shrubs or perennials in containers, choose plants 2 Hardiness Zones colder than where you live. In your case, that would mean choosing from Zone 3 plants for your container garden tree.
