climbing hydrangeas

how can I get my Climbing hydrangea to climb? It wants to crawl away from the roots, even when I take string to try to tie it up to where I want it to grow & then some of the branches will break off. It's a 5 yr old plant that this is the 1st yr it's bloomed & some of it has grown up the lattice. Thanks for your help I'm in Kaukauna, WI zone 5

Tie it to the lattice. If branches are breaking, then you may need to tie it at more points along the vines, so there's less movement in the wind. But it is typical to give these vines a bit of an assist by tieing, so despite your difficulties, this is the correct approach.
