can you plant flowers around a newly planted tree?

I just planted new tree. I put stones and garden soil around the base and planted a few snap dragons and alyssum. Then I was told I shouldn't plant the flowers that it wound take nutrients away from the trees roots and possibly kill the tree. It's a large tree with a 6" circumference . Should I take out the flowers?

You will be fine. Annuals will not rob enough nutrients to do serious harm to the tree. Something I want to mention is, make sure the garden soil you added is not burying the trunk of the tree. That's very risky.
