Can I save my holly bush or is it too late?

My spring planted conical holly upright- 5 ft tall, main stem 2 in in diameter-has leaves that have suddenly begun drying up and falling off. Did it get too little water? How can I save it?

If the woody stems are not brittle, the holly may resprout if given enough water. Most newly planted trees and shrubs need regular watering for the first couple of years until their roots spread into surrounding soil.
