california live oak death

In San Diego County we are experiencing fairly sudden death to old established oaks. I live in the community of Pine Valley, Ca. 91962..Our small community has had a 75% loss of old oak trees in the valley in the last few years. Some experts think its a borer and other think it is a root fungus...can you help or have you heard of the outbreak.

Sudden oak death is a fungus that has been well-documented in attacking oaks and many other species in the last few years throughout California. There very well could be a combination of sudden oak death AND borers affecting the oaks in your locale. The University of California has an excellent on-line bulletin with details on sudden oak death. You can find it at http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7498.html
